Power and Performance

The 2022 Toyota Prius Prime looks sporty, but that’s where sportiness ends. It runs on a 1.8L four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor. It’s not the quickest hybrid out there, which might be a turn-off if you like pep in your step. On its own, the engine provides 95 horsepower but combined with the hybrid system; it nets 121 horsepower. With three driving modes, Power, Normal and Eco, you can adjust the level of acceleration to suit your needs, but none will give you any sense of actual speed. The transition between electric and gas feels smooth and easy, which is great if the battery gives out in the middle of a drive. The Prime is also super comfortable for little jaunts as a commuter car, and handling feels solid due to its low and wide stance.

Range, Battery and Charging

Running on electricity alone, you can get about 40km on a full charge which is enough if you use this vehicle for short daily commutes. If you are plugging into a standard 120-volt household outlet, you can expect the Prius Prime to fully charge in 5.5 hours. A level 2 charger (240-volt) can finish the job in 2 hours.

When the battery depletes, the Prime automatically switches from electric mode to gas-hybrid operation. As long as there is gas in the tank, the Prius Prime will continue to run. If you feel like you might stress about finding a charging station, have no fear. Gas stations are a dime a dozen, so you will never find yourself stranded in this car.

Interior and Cargo Space

At first glance, the interior of the Prius Prime is roomy, modern and maybe even a little weird, with the electronic shifter sticking straight out of the center of the dash.

The Prius Prime base model has cloth seats with manual adjustment, a 7-inch touchscreen complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and satellite radio.

The UPGRADE version swaps cloth seats for heated faux leather, a power driver’s seat, wireless charging and a bigger 11.6-inch touchscreen. Along with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, this trim includes Toyota’s Connected Services (gives you features through your phone like unlocking doors and checking the fuel level) and a heated steering wheel. You can add a “Technology” package which gives further upgrades like a premium stereo, head-up display, auto-dimming mirror, garage door opener, parking clearance sonar and assist, rain-sensing wipers, LED fog lights, and unique 15-inch wheels.
