There are many things in life that make us say “ouch”. Bee stings, stubbed toes…frostbite. These days though, if you’re a Canadian, it’s probable that you have come close to shedding a tear over something else. Gas prices. The numbers at the pump have been growing like a nasty virus, and there is no cure in sight.
The national average gas price rose to $2.06 this past Sunday. That’s up almost 3 cents from the day before and 11 cents higher than a week ago. With records being broken all over the country, Canadians are struggling to afford a fill-up. That is unless you drive an electric vehicle. And if you don’t, you might want to consider it.
Gas prices across the country as of Sunday
- Vancouver $2.37
- Montreal $2.24
- St. John’s $2.23
- Toronto $2.15
Keep in mind that these prices are for regular unleaded gas. If you drive a high-performance vehicle that requires premium fuel, you’re looking at upwards of $2.50. These eye-watering numbers result from a tight supply made worse by the Russian invasion of Ukraine coupled with strong demand as people start to plan for a busy travel season.
Long story short, we will be in this “ouch” mode at the pump for the unforeseeable future.
What can you do?
- Avoid “jack-rabbit” starts, rapid acceleration and hard braking, which can lower fuel economy by 15-40%.
- Minimize cold engine operation by starting your vehicle and driving normally to warm the engine.
- Observe speed limits.
- Use cruise control to minimize speed fluctuations.
- Avoid idling.
- DRIVE AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Now is as good a time as ever to consider driving a new or used electric vehicle. There are so many reasons why driving an EV is awesome and avoiding the high price of gas is just one of them. Driving an electric vehicle has never been more affordable with so many pre-owned EVs on the market.
