A Smooth Operator with a Quick Punch…The 2022 Kia EV6

The electric vehicle market is exploding. With such high demand for EVs, automakers are busting out some incredible innovations to win the hearts and minds of drivers everywhere.

One new EV with an insane cool factor is the Kia EV6. It is the first 5-passenger, all-electric crossover from the Korean automaker. Not only is it striking to look at, but the modern interior is loaded with next-gen tech and a full suite of feature content. Get behind the wheel and this electric vehicle drives like a dream. Kia really showed up with the EV6, and we are loving every bit of it.

Power and Performance

Quick off the line, the Kia EV6 immediately gives you a sense of power and punch. Depending on which of the five trims you choose, horsepower can be between 167 and 320 with 258lb and 446 lb of torque, respectively.

The base model comes standard range, rear-wheel-drive with a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle and can go 0-100km in 8.5 seconds. From here, you can upgrade to the long-range RWD giving you a slightly bigger battery and horsepower of 225, or you can make it AWD in either a long-range model or one of two sporty GT-Line trims taking you up to 320 horsepower. The AWD GT-Line models go 0-100km in 4.9 seconds. The GT-Line model is for you if you are looking for fast acceleration, agile handling and some serious race car vibes.

Regardless of the trim, all versions of the Kia EV6 are immensely smooth, quiet and fun to drive. The platform is solid and takes the edge off beaten and bumpy roads. Driving this EV is truly a treat.

Range, Battery and Charging

The Kia EV6 offers two battery sizes: a 58.0-kWh and a 77.4-kWh pack. The smaller standard battery provides 373km of range, and the AWD versions offer up to 441km of range. When winter is upon us and temperatures dip, EV batteries increase resistance which means range reduction in most cases. To counter this, the Kia EV6 uses an eco-friendly heat pump to recycle heat given off by the vehicle’s electronic components and use it to optimize the battery-pack temperature.

As with most EVs, charging on a level one standard household outlet is a long process. The base RWD model can take up to 51 hours, while all other models can take up to 68 hours.

Charging Level 2 (240 volts)

  • RWD Standard Range (Base Model) – 5 hours 50 minutes
  • All other models – 7 hours 10 minutes

Charging Level 3 (Fast Charger) – 10% to 80%

  • RWD Standard Range (Base Model) – 18 minutes
  • All other models – 18 minutes

Interior and Cargo Space

Attractive and futuristic, the interior of the Kia EV6 is pleasing to even the pickiest of eyes. A digital dashboard comprised of two large 12-inch screens (one a gauge cluster and the other the infotainment system) sits above a two-tone, two-spoke steering wheel. A floating center console has a wireless phone charger, controls for the heated seats and steering wheel and provides generous storage with a large bin beneath it.

As far as cabin room, if you are tall, you might find your head kissing the ceiling in the driver’s seat, but the available legroom in the front and back seats is massive. For cargo, when all seats are folded flat, the Kia EV6 has 1,415 litres of space for your gear. There is a small frunk (front trunk), but it is minimal and can hold maybe a bag or two of groceries.

The infotainment system includes popular features such as…

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Wifi Hotspot
  • Navigation
  • Bluetooth cell phone connectivity

The 6-speaker audio system can be upgraded to a 14-speaker Meridian sound system. Also available in the EV6 is next-generation head-up display (HUD). It uses augmented reality (AR) technology to project a three-dimensional snapshot of essential driving information inside the windshield, just below your line of sight, so you never have to take your eyes off the road.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Kia EV6 includes automated emergency braking and automatic high beams. Several other optional assists can be added for an even safer experience.

Standard features include…

  • 7 airbags (driver knee, dual advanced front, dual side curtain, dual front side seat)
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • 4-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Hill-assist control (HAC)
  • Forward collision-avoidance assist (FCA)
  • Lane Keep Assist System (LKA)
  • Lane Follow Assist (LFA)
  • Driver attention warning (DAW)
  • Rear Occupant Alert
