If you’re on the fence about electric vehicles because you are worried about range, battery life and charging availability, a hybrid might be the right transition vehicle for you. A hybrid vehicle combines a gasoline engine with one or more electric motors. With most hybrids, there is no need to plug it in because regenerative braking recaptures energy to recharge the battery as you drive. Sometimes the electric motor does all the work, sometimes, the gas engine does all the work, and sometimes, they work together. The result is less gas burned and better fuel economy.
One of our favourite hybrid vehicles is the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Although 2020 was the last year that Ford made this gem, it’s still a fantastic mid-sized sedan hybrid if you can get your hands on one. Here are a few more reasons this classy hybrid makes our “hot” list.
Power and Performance
The 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid has a 2.0-litre combustion engine combined with an electric motor that gives it 188 horsepower and 129 ft-lb of torque. A Ford Fusion Energi plug-in model also shares the same powertrain as the hybrid and an all-electric driving range of about 40km.
Both models are very comfortable and offer a very smooth driving experience. But what we really love is that this sedan has excellent acceleration and agile handling giving it a sporty feel and making it fun to drive.
Battery and Charging
Both the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Ford Fusion Energi use a battery to keep the electric motor running.
The Ford Fusion Hybrid has a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery supplying the motor with electricity. You recharge the battery partly through braking and partly using the gasoline engine. That means you put gas in the tank and just drive. No plug-in is required.
The Ford Fusion Energi has a much more powerful 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, and you can plug the car in. It comes with a 120-volt convenience charge cord, which can recharge the battery in about seven hours. You can get about 42km of all-electric range on this model.
Interior and Cargo Space
The interior of a Ford Fusion is just as attractive as its exterior. Cloth or leather, the seats are made with comfort in mind, and special touches like a leather-wrapped steering wheel amplify the luxurious sensation. Dual-zone climate control, power front seats and two 4.2-inch touch gauge cluster displays are standard in all models. Other features include;
- A nine-speaker audio system
- SYNC 3 infotainment system with 8.0-inch touchscreen
- Apple CarPlay
- Android Auto integration
- keyless entry/start
- navigation
- remote start
The large lithium-ion battery used by the Ford Fusion Energi Plug-In cuts trunk space down to 8.2 cubic feet from 12.0 cubic feet on the non-plug-in hybrid model and 16.0 cubic feet on the other models.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Staying on theme with luxury, the Ford Fusion has a boatload of safety and driving assist features that make even the most anxious drivers feel relaxed.
- lane-keeping assist
- blind-spot monitoring
- rear cross-traffic alert
- forward collision warning
- automatic emergency braking
- pedestrian detection
- automatic high beams
- adaptive cruise control
