5 of the Best “Easter Eggs” from Tesla

If you’re a Tesla fan, you know there is so much more to their electric vehicles than clean emissions and beautiful lines. There are easter eggs. Before your mouth starts to water, we’re not talking about yummy little chocolates wrapped in tinfoil. These easter eggs are hidden features that aren’t advertised to consumers but rather entertaining elements that you can only find by doing some exploration. From rainbow roads to Christmas shows, Tesla is known for having the coolest stash of easter eggs in their EVs.

Here are our top 5 favourite Tesla easter eggs.

Rainbow Charge Port Light

Charging is probably not the most exciting aspect of owning an electric vehicle, but it can be quite the experience for Tesla owners. When a Tesla is plugged in, pushing the charge port control button ten times quickly activates a hidden port light feature. The charge port will light up and cycle through the colours of the rainbow, treating its owner to a miniature light show.

Model X Light Show and Trans-Siberian Orchestra

This easter egg is exclusive to the Model X, and although it’s a little tricky to activate, it’s well worth the effort. Your Tesla will perform a light show with its headlights, fog lights and turn signals, and open and close its front and falcon-wing back doors in time to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Wizards in Winter.” The rear-view mirrors will also retract in time with the music.

To activate.

  • Press the Tesla “T” icon at the top of the touchscreen display for 5 seconds
  • Once you see the water ripple away from the “T,” release your finger, and a text box will appear that says, “please enter access code.”
  • Enter “holiday” or “ModelXmas” and press OK
  • A message will instruct, “The show will begin after you exit the car, close all doors and press the lock button on the key. The show requires 6 feet of space above and around the vehicle.”

Alternatively, the same activation can be achieved by tapping the image of a green holiday ornament in the “Easter Egg Drawer,” which appears automatically shortly after the “About Your Tesla” menu is accessed. The “About your Tesla” menu can be accessed by tapping the Tesla “T” at the top right of the touchscreen display.

Mars and Mars Rover GPS

This incredible easter egg changes the GPS map on the Tesla touchscreen to show the surface of Mars instead of Earth. The surface moves and turns just as it would if the regular GPS was on, except the arrow depicting your location is now the Mars Rover. Hold the “T” Tesla logo on display at the top to activate. When it prompts for a code, enter the word “Mars,” and the screen will switch to show Mars’ rugged surface.

Santa Mode

This festive easter egg includes visual graphics and musical elements. Using the voice command “Ho, Ho, Ho,” Your Tesla will play “Run, Run, Rudolf” by Chuck Berry. If you say “Ho, Ho, Ho Not Funny,” your Tesla will play “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” It’s important to note that the songs play for about 1 minute, and the volume can’t be adjusted. You can also access Santa Mode from the “Easter Egg Drawer” by tapping the reindeer. Other cool features of this easter egg are…

  • Santa on a sleigh will replace the image of the Tesla car on the touchscreen.
  • A snow effect will appear on the screen.
  • Turning signals will sound like sleigh bells.

Rainbow Road and “Don’t Fear the Reaper” (“More Cowbell” from SNL)

This hidden feature requires the use of Autopilot. Tesla owners have always been able to watch their car navigate on the infotainment console, but this hidden gem changes the road to a rainbow road similar to the one in Mario Kart. To activate, click “Autopilot” 4 times in quick succession. What’s super fun is that this activation also prompts the song “Don’t Fear the Reaper” from Blue Oyster Cult to play in the cabin. The version of the song that plays is from the Saturday Night Live skit in which music producer Bruce Dickinson played by Christopher Walken, encourages Gene Frenkle, played by Will Ferrell, to play more cowbell. As part of the Easter egg, you can hear Christopher Walken stating his lines from the skit that he “has a fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell.”
